Logwood & Marigold Dying

As part of the History of Textiles course, I conducted a hands-on experiment in which I recreated the traditional dying process of raw wool and cotton fibers using Logwood chips and Marigold flowers, a technique used before the industrial revolution. To obtain various colors, the experiment tested different mordants, heat, cold, soaking time, and dye concentration with other fibers. Through this project, I gained an in-depth understanding of the dying process and its history. The final presentation included a video montage of the experiment and my commentary on the process. A final paper was submitted that documented the entire experimental process and included detailed photographs. Adding in metrics: I have successfully recreated the traditional dying process of raw wool and cotton fibers using Logwood chips and Marigold flowers, demonstrating a practical understanding of historical textile techniques. We conducted a comprehensive experiment testing different mordants, heat, cold, soaking time, dye concentration, and fiber to achieve different colors. This resulted in a thorough understanding of the dying process and its nuances. The final presentation and paper showcasing the experiment and historical significance, created using Microsoft PowerPoint and Word, received top marks from the professor, with a final grade of 95%.
